ZARRAGA, Iloilo — Two softball teams from this town will represent the Philippines in an Asia Pacific competition in Clark, Pampanga this June 28–June 3.
The Iloilo Little League (elementary) and the Iloilo Junior League (secondary) softball teams, with 12 girl players each, emerged as champions in the Little League Philippine Series 2013 recently held in Tanauan, Batangas.
They represented Iloilo in the Batangas games after wining in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet, said Romeo Golez, one of their coaches.
Ninety-six teams from different parts of the country joined in the Little League Philippine Series 2013 softball and baseball games.
Last year, the teams also competed in the Philippine Series but only landed first runner-up.
If they win in the Asia Pacific games, they will compete in the Asia Pacific Whole Series to be held in Washington, USA.
The teams’ other coaches are Rogie Donguines and Guy Fuentes, the head coach.
Most the teams’ players are from this municipality, while some were from Dueñas, Pototan and Barotac Viejo.
Golez thanked those who extended assistance to the players, especially the Department of Education and the municipal government of Zarraga.
The triumph of the teams could uplift the sports program not only of Zarraga but also of the province, according to Golez.
The coach said that, of their P271,000 fund, the provincial government shouldered P50,000 while the Zarraga government provided for the remaining amount./PN
