“Nature Strikes Back" We never learned our lesson. The Ormoc tragedy shocked the nation some years back, then came the Quezon and Leyte. All tragedies claimed hundreds of lives, all because people abused nature and the agency in charge, the DENR is either too soft to implement the law or in connivance with greedy business ventures... What happened to Kalibo recently was something we thought would never happen to us. We thought we were invincible and that nature would never give us what we deserve, but it did. We paid too high a price for all our abuses to Mother Nature... - email: rye_nicolie@yahoo.com

As another way of cushioning the impact of high prices and the recent onslaught of typhoon "Frank" in Western Visayas, why not the government temporarily suspends the implementation of EVAT for 6 months. Also, to reduce the pollution in Iloilo City due to the effect of dust, it is suggested that Mayor Jerry should create a volunteer task force comprising government employees and students (high school and college) and all the barangay officials in cleaning the main streets of the city. The mayor should declare four (4) successive Saturdays as "Operation Walis Day". Traffic in the city to be rerouted for streets affected by the clean-up drive. For residential areas such as subdivisions, he should encourage its constituents to abide by the rules of "tapat ko linis ko". Owners of residential houses fronting the streets should voluntarily do the cleaning of its yard and the street fronting his residence. If citizens will fully cooperate, of course, with the mayors "pakiusap" thru the radio and TV broadcast, in one month’s time, I am sure, Iloilo City will be free of dust. - email: eufraciocaballero@yahoo.com

Hello! I am from Iloilo and presently working with the U.S Navy. Some of my co-workers were there too with the Naval ship. I am just sad that hearing news about the relief goods given by the US Navy, I feel ashamed if those relief won't go to the least fortunate/victims of the recently calamity. Some of the U.S navy personnel here in the Base read the article and it gave them a bad impression on how folks handle the aids. Thank you. God bless. - email: Leo.Tamisen.RP@fe.navy.mil

To: Lapsus Calami, Thank you so much for taking a courageous stance to speak up. It is my fervent wish to meet you on my next visit though it may not be possible given that you have to protect your identity. TO: Panay News my heartfelt "thank you" for bringing us closer to home. It is so disheartening to hear that the flood victims did not receive the canned goods donated by the US Military. I have been away from the Philippines for almost 29 years except for short visits. This thievery and corruption brought back some memories of interesting discussions I had with our father. Government corruption is universal. In my younger days, the corrupt officials pretty stand out in the community and the people tolerate them but do not fear them. Like Tatay would say: Bisan makawat ri-a may iki man nga delikadesa kag kahuya. There is a bit of restraint in their lifestyle and in some degree share their wealth with the poor. Now, corruption and thievery in the government equates to power and blatant display of wealth. The lack of human decency not just by subjecting fear and intimidation upon the poor and needy but by taking away from the poor/needy what is left of them: their self-respect and survival. - email: zdawson@cleansed.net

Mayor Jerry is and will be Sana Claus this year. Why ? Because he has vowed not to shave until Iloilo City is clean. Allegedly there are 350 plus casual employees cleaning the drains and the streets of all the mud left over from Typhoon Frank. Well Mayor Jerry, where the heck are they? I don't see them in Lapaz or Jaro (two of the hardest hit districts)! Your beard will be as long and white as Santa's because you have many "ghost workers". I challenge you to dispute my claim. This city will be cleaned just in time for Christmas if we are lucky at the present rate. Never mind the "big mmda street sweepers that are supposed to be here this week) and still not yet arrived. Well it's past Wednesday and we have yet to see truck one from MMDA. LOL Yeah this week my butt. Yet another lie. His beard will also be white because Panay news reported last week that 19,000 bags of spoiled NFA rice had been "disposed of, buried" ! Yet it still sits in baranganuay Suba Jaro rotting and causing health problems for the reidents. As for the water being restored to 80 percent with the reactivation of the "old MIWD processing plant" that too is bullshit. We have unreliable and an unpredictable water supply. No way of telling when/if the water from the city will come on and for how long and it's quality. The last batch my neighbors and I received in Lapaz smelled and looked like it was pumped directly from the Jaro river untreated. Great for flushing toilets, but not much use otherwise. While I am on the subject MIWD is demanding full payment for water that is barely fit for flushing a toilet !I urge Mayor Jerry to investigate my claims. The same pissed off Kano in Iloilo that has written you in the past. How long will the good people of Iloilo City tolerate this ?Me ? I am planning to sell my home in ledesco and move to Bacolod city where I pay half as much for rent/water/electricity as I do here. Sorry to say I have lost all faith that Iloilo City will grow and become a premier medium city like Bacolod. Mayor Jerry's promise to "look into" PECO'S exuberant rates have been swept under the rug with the rest of the trash! - email: oneiloilojeepeny@yahoo.com.ph

Please pardon me for being out of the subject but I have to release (unfreeze) what is frozen on my mind. I would like to comment regarding how Meralco conducts their business. People pay for everything even the so called "systems loss" which they say is power stolen from the system. I suggest that every applicant be scrutinized in terms of his eligibility to be customer of Meralco. For example, an applicant living in the "informal areas" should be denied of his application because he is not a bonafide resident of that area, wherever that may be. This way, it doesn't encourage informal settlers to stay much less to inhabit an area which isn't theirs. No lease of contract, no power. No land title, no power. Simple dude. But by the way Meralco does its business, everybody is given a chance to have its own utilities regardless of where they are, even residents "under bridges" I suppose. If this isn't greed, then what is it? - email: jryabc67@yahoo.com

"The call by Sen. Franklin Drilon for the immediate passage of the bill for the release of emergency fund for the rehabilitation of Panay most especially the infrastructures is laudable. What we need now is cooperation from among the politicians not only in the province of Iloilo but for the whole island of Panay. I salute Senator Drilon for all his accomplishments in Iloilo unlike the other politicians who are just good in rhetorics but not in action. I am puzzled why Iloilo is way behind in developments as compared to other places? Is it due to too much politics? I sometimes feel that maybe we as ordinary citizens should take an active participation in the affairs of our local government not only in voicing out our opinions but also in civic activities. As a start, I would like to propose for the Ilonggos especially the OFWs all over the world to start contributing our hard earned money of US5.00 per month for the building of FLOOD CONTROL projects in Iloilo, aside from the ongoing project of the government. This contributions to be monitored by NGOs including its administration so that we can be at least assured of transparency and effeciency.Any comments from our readers.....whether you are an Ilonggo working as a nurse in UK or USA or an engineer in the middle east or somewhere else. This is a noble cause ....if we love our province Iloilo let us start it now. “t is me again, Martin Stummer, your fomer columnist "Bravo". Let me express my deep regret over the tragedy that hit Iloilo and the whole country. Hopefully no more typhoons like Frank. In my eyes this was Gods will to punish those evil people who destroyed the precious forests. It reminds me of the Tsunami of the Indian Ocean a few years ago and statements of Ilongo politicians that proclaimed: "Iloilo is a God fearing city, such a desaster can never happen to us". It demonstrates that the political institutions have totally failed. Do not provoke God with shameless statements.
While you suffered from rain, we experience tropical heat with endless sun.
As often as possible I bring my family to lakes, parks and forests. Our kids Leo and Elea enjoy the "duyan" , to play in the grasslands and to observe the peacocks at "Pfauen" -Island in Berlin. Bell likes to pick up wild raspberries. For her home-made cake she uses big strawberries.
Back at home my son Mateus distributed funny "football" hairdo because all of Europe was possessed by the European soccer championship and the media had no more space to follow up the tragedy that was and still is unfolding in the Philippines.
Kind regards,
Martin (Stummer)

Kurzuebersetzung Deutsch:

" It is good that a proper investigation has been conducted by authorities for us to know the reason for the disaster. The sited reasons although logiocal and scientific, can still be improved if some factors such as topography analysis has been factored in. According to the people distributing aid, they were told not to give food to anyone who had relatives overseas. This is patently unfair in a natural catastrophe such as typhoon Frank. Nature does not discriminate based on where one?s relatives live. All were flooded and all were unable to obtain food. I would like to know why the government feels it needs to discriminate in such a manner. No force on earth could have gotten food to Iloilo any quicker than the barangay officials did. "hi, i'm from San Joaquin. The three-day strike hit me badly, i came to the office late on Monday and came home at 1am Tuesday, that made me absent for the whole tuesday. I can't take any absence anymore or tardiness once again because we follow "no work , no pay policy". A day of no pay for me means tight budgeting for my two pre-schoolers. I woke-up as early as 4am last wednesday just to catch a bus from Antique passing by our area and luckily i wasn't late that day but unfortunately i have to ask our HR that i need to undertime for an hour to be able to have the last trip of bus. Thanks this will be my last sacrifice. Today is Thursday, i rode a jeep ...kailinit gid ya as in nadula gid ya good mood ko...late na naman ko as in. Daw ka shocking na gid gakalatabo ga-expect ko ya nga all is well na sus naglala pa gid. Pwede lang ka-ask ano gid man ang mga ginahangyo sang FIJODA, kag budlay gid man para kay MR. PLAGATA nga ihatag ang mga ginahangyo sang asosasyon? kag tani mabatyagan man nila ang epekto sa amon nga mga commuters, everyday is like hell for me this past few days. Kung gusto nila taasan pamasahe ok lang kung gusto nila may terminal fee that will be fine pero tani hindi lang man nga amo ni daw la kasiguruhan bwas diin naman kami puluton? kami nga mga ordinaryo nga tao ang gaka-apektuhan...tani they will consider naman and please wala lang tani sang pa-astigan kung sin-o ang sin-o kay damo ang ga-suffer sa ginahimo nila. Subject: City Elected Public Officals
Dear Sirs:
What these city public officials think by appearing in product endorsements? Do they think they are gaining "pogi" points? One official even mentioned that is it the establishments who are approaching them to endorse their products and services. These people should really have some sort delicadeza and do you think they are doing for free? They don't even look good in their respective ads. I suggest that they concentrate on their jobs. That's what the people are expecting of them not appearing on commercials. Kahuluya guid sa mga Ilonggo.

"Greetings!May I suggest to the City's traffic committee to study the implementation of the "color coding" scheme, similar to what is implemented in Manila. The study should involve the various agencies, private car owners and associations of public utilities.I believe this is a very beneficial system for all parties concerned due to the following reasons:1. This will declog traffic (removing excess PUV's and private vehicles that are usually just 10 to 25% full)2. Better income for the drivers and an additional rest day for them (thereby promoting better living conditions)3. Operator's income will not be affected since they can adjust rental rates.4. This will "force" us to better manage our resources and save on our fuel consumption.Furthermore, Greenpeace should help and take an active and CONSTRUCTIVE role in the implementation of this scheme (Nation-wide, even on cities that do not have traffic problems)May I request Lapsus Calami to bring this to the attention of the agencies concerned.Best regards." - Anonymous concerned citizen

"Dear Mr./Ms.: I want to thank you for your fair and vigilant coverage of the death of Vice Mayor Ramon M. Rojas, Jr. Your reporting has provided much support for our family, both for those in Iloilo and all of us here in the U.S. There's a lot of us here; from L.A., New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Florida, San Francisco, Connecticet, Texas, Alaska, Chicago, etc. Plus in other countries, Ireland, England, and Canada. We all follow your newscast every day. You provided a major link for all of us, from abroad to Iloilo. We are all very grateful to you. I am an American citizen, I have lived in L.A. for 20 years. I am a California CPA and currently working for CIM Group, Inc. in West Hollywood. In support of your media coverage, and in support of my family, I have written to all facets of media here in the U.S. hoping for more attention and more coverage of the human rights violations in Ajuy and Iloilo. I have also written to all the Human Rights Violations Centers in the U.S. I have written to all the senators and members of congress asking for help and even for financial donations to be used in the fight to bring about the fall of a family who spreads oppression and murder. There is no assurance that I will get the response that I want, but I know Americans, I know that they love to help the underdog and the downtrodden. They love to get involved in situations such as our family is in right now. We feel downtrodden somehow because one of us is dead, whereas they are all still alive and thriving. But we do not want pity, we are working to get as much attention as possible to the human rights violations in Ajuy. I am confident that as I continue my efforts, I will get a lot of Americans to pay attention and to get involved. It's just a matter of time. So good luck to you and to my efforts here. More power to you and please continue your excellent job of providing relevant news everywhere. May God bless us all. Sincerely, Joji Rojas." - jojirojas1@yahoo.com

"Death of A Loved One ? Vice Mayor Ramon M. Rojas, Jr.It?s always difficult to lose a loved one, but when you lose him to an assassin?s nine bullets . . . there are no words to express the pain and the sorrow. How do you describe a widow?s heart that?s broken into a million pieces? How about the young children, who had such a gentle and loving father, they all slept on different beds in one room. How do you explain to a 4-year-old little girl, that she cannot be with her grandpa anymore? A whole town is grieving, their beloved vice mayor taken from them senselessly. The neighboring towns are grieving, outraged at the latest brutality of a rich and powerful family, who is in the business of murdering innocent men.We, as a community of Christians and Catholics, we need to say in one voice, ENOUGH! These acts of brutality by one family has to stop. We Ilonggos are civilized, God-fearing, and just. But in the midst of us is this family , who not only is willing, but is eager to murder the innocent. I am ashamed to call them fellow Ilonggos. They have no remorse, rather they are proud of being killers, proud of mocking God?s laws and human laws, proud of breaking the Sixth Commandment, ?You shall not murder,? taking lives at their whim. They play God, deciding who lives or who dies. The latest victim, was Vice Mayor Ramon M. Rojas, Jr., a gentle and kind man, who never did any harm to the murderer or the murderer?s family. They had no reason to kill him, none whatsoever. We are a community, we have a common thread, our respect for the sanctity of life; and we are the majority. There is only a tiny minority among us, one family who laughs at our deepest values, one family whose lifestyle is at the core of violence in Ajuy. An evil act is evil, in the eyes of God and man, even if it comes from a sophisticated and wealthy family. They feign respectability on the surface, but underneath is a lust for murder that puts so many lives at risk. In their extreme arrogance, they believe they are above the law. They laugh at the police, believing that they are untouchable. They laugh at our grief, happy that they have taken another innocent life. Let us not be complacent. Let us hold on to our outrage against this latest act of murder, let us all help in any way and in all ways, big or small, to catch this brutal criminal. Let us remember the dead until justice is served. Enough of this arrogant brazen murderer. Let us all collectively seek justice , so that evildoers do not triumph again. Let us show our children and the next generations that Ilonggos still believe in honor and just courage." - jojirojas1@yahoo.com

"All the symbolism of freedom is useless. Filipinos might do well under foreign dominitions. They could have access to free medical, educations and financially stable. If you look at before and after 'independencies' nothing really has change. Filipinos work abroad as slaves, domestic help or professionals. Any previous of current government has not attempted to develop and train human resources to attract foreign or domestic corporations. Filipino politicians are egotistical maniacs, pretending to be well educated and well mannered. Just hear what they are saying and observe what they are talking. They think they own the country. They simply wear their rose-colored glasses pretending not seein all the malnnourish childrens, drug related victims, unemployments, etc. Are these stupid politicians never watch the local news? You don't even have to watch the news! What a crappy country, the Philippines. I am directing the Commission on Higher Education
(CHED) to put off any increase in tuition fees for state universities
and colleges this coming schoolyear 2008-2009. I am also directing the
CHED to communicate my appeal to private higher education institutions
to reconsider and freeze plans to increase tuition fees and other fees
this schoolyear. The last thing that our parents need at this point to
keep their children striving for college diplomas is another round of
adjustment in tuition fees and other school expenses. – PRES. GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO

"PRESS STATEMENTContact person: Leonor Gomez TFDP-Visayas Email address: lnr_gomez@yahoo.com CP# 09284620928CREEPING CULTURE OF IMPUNITY The many unsolved extra judicial killings against unaware and unarmed civilians poses a big question mark against the law enforcement and justice efforts by our government. When the rule of law is oftenly violated and no palpable results are achieved by those tasked to guarantee the rights of civilians and safeguard their lives, the confidence of public on them is severely eroded. In fact we cannot blame others who in silent protest even put certain elements in authority suspect to crimes because of their inability to put a stop to this sense of impunity among those who carry out the act and their masters. From December 2004 until March 16,2006, when we had stopped counting due to an almost daily reported vigilante-style killings, we have noted 120 cases. Since that time there had been many more killings reported every day. We have yet to hear if any of these cases have been solved in terms of arresting the culprits and the brains behind them. On May 21, Atty. Richard Sison has been added to this long string of unsolved murders. The kind of general reaction drawn out by almost daily news of civilians or petty criminals being killed has seemingly produced social numbness which people may have acquired over the long period of hearing non-arrest of the so called vigilantes or hired killers who are attacking the civilians. The pervasiveness of apathy among the people and actions from the local authority that produce no tangible results promote permissiveness among our people to the culture of impunity creeping in the city.Continuing media attention, public vigilance, a pro-active judiciary are not enough for ending the culture of impunity. Proper investigation and efficient prosecution is a sine-qua-non for such trial. And combining all those conditions is?, no doubt, the rarest occasion to happen." - lnr_gomez@yahoo.com

“ Guimaras Strait spans the island province of Guimaras and stretches along the coast of Negros Island with its pristine ecosystem. With its biodiversity under threat due to human activity, pollution from passing sea vessels in the area, which intentionally dump wastewater, oils, fuels, garbage and some abrasive chemicals during their passage in the area will eventually result into undue degradation of its marine ecosystem, thus, directly affects its underlying environment which depends on its steady stream of fresh oxygen-rich currents from the north and west of its channels. I feel sorry for the next generation. What will be their future if we do not take good care of our natural resources who sustain our everyday needs? I fervently hope that the national government, DENR and its line agencies together with the LGU's implement the existing law and it should be religiously observed. The rivers meet the sea, the forests longs for the sea and the river altogether sustain life in the sea, therefore we ought to protect it for our survival and our future. It is only then we could say we did all we could to protect Mother Nature and the environment that sustains us all.” - amanzan@smartbro.net

“ Paging Supt. Ricardo de la Paz. Just for clarification: With this declaration, does this include persons or entities in the government giving protection to people known to have committed criminal acts, as in murder or frustrated murder, yet had given them sanctuary for they know each or under orders from someone of a higher position from them? “ - lougonzo920@yahoo.com

“ According to the DENR, this area is not suitable for resettlement because it is part of the tidelands. Also, the tidelands is necessary for habitat of sea life and can affect future harvests from the sea. Other branches of government should take the recommendation of the DENR and look for a more suitable site.” - evertaneis@yahoo.com.

“ Ms Vail's letter is not formally worded. LIke, "My goodness, Mr Uy..." It is a conversation with a close friend. It should not have gone around.Confrontation, even in letters, can be civil. That is why we have a subject on this in our English class.A persuasive essay, a confrontational letter, a letter of complaint. In this we are taught what is good and what is not, esp when writing to a head of a respectable office.” - ann

"I am very happy that Capiz is bidding to host the Palarong pambansa at least officials are doing something to promot the province. I also hope that if ever approved, politicians will not take advantage of it in term of commisioning or making money for themselves. “ Just an opinion... Well, that means only one thing... Former Governor Vicente Bermejo, now Roxas City Mayor is much better as local chief executive compared to Former 3-terms City Mayor Antonio del Rosario now 1st District Congressman coz that stats showed the downgrade was during the latter's administration. I believe that Mayor Bermejo wouldn't allow another downgrade and would be challenged to upgrade the city's category in his term just like what he did to the whole province during his 3-terms. I believe that Roxas City and the whole Province of Capiz have potentials for progress provided the people of Capiz would vote the righteous persons who would serve them best. Serve What is Best for Capiz!” - denski21@yahoo.com

"The power outages in Iloilo needs to be addressed. There are plenty ogf small business suffering from this intermittent services. The least PECO could do is issue a schedule. I am frustrated with the fact they cannot provide service and information. This is very irresponsible of PECO." - victoria.ralf@yahoo.com

“ Congratulations to Panay News. Even if I am here in Manila, I can easily read through your website the local news in Panay and the Visayas, including Antique Province where I come from.We would appreciate it very much if Panay News could run the latest updates on the much delayed concreting of the the more or less 30-kilometer southern Antique coastal road from Villavert-Jimenez or Guinsang-an, in Hamtic to the Tiolas,in San Joaquin. This national road that passes through the towns of Tobias A. Fornier (Dao) and Anini-y remains unpaved until now, although the plans sent by the DPWH in Manila as furnished by the DPWH Region VI showed that the project implementation was in 2007 yet. The said national road is part of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (or RORO)with daily trips from Cubao to Iloilo City and vice-versa with buses like Dimple Star, Gasat, Ceres, and others. The people would want to know what happened to the project. In the 1960s this road was supposed to be paved then had it not been for the untimely death of the late Cong. Tobias A. Fornier, and in the mid-1970s, but the concreting was transferred to the easily eroded mountain route from Tiolas to Guinsang-an or Vllavert-Jimenez, Hamtic. The people of Antiuqe know, that apart from the economic benefit of the project, the project, too, would enhance the tourism potentials of southern Antique to mention the development of Siraan Hot Spring, Nogas Island, and resorts in Tobias A. Fornier with idyllic postcard-like beach scenery. The southern part of Antique has a lot more to offer for tourism, if we do not have bumpy and dusty roads. How long should the people wait? We want to know.” - pol_diana@yahoo.com

“ Re: Coal PlantTime and again, the people of Iloilo don't deserve to inhale these toxic waste coming from the proposed coal plant. Is Mayor Trenas really truthful in saying that the opposition have no alternative or is this just His and his cohorts' ( Politicians and PECO) agenda? The problem with them is that they tend to have stiff necks that they refuse to look at the other side of the equation. Who's interest are these politicians working for, their friend's and their pockets or their constituents?” - lougonzo920@yahoo.com

“ I am not an environmentalist by any means. I sometimes recycle, my car is not a hybrid, and in most part do my fare share of "warming" the globe. But one thing I do care about is the preservation of the natural environment in the Philippines. It is upsetting to see foreigners have so much control over the development of our country, such as Boracay. The coal-powered plant in my hometown of Iloilo is a major step backwards into keeping a greener Iloilo. Tourists flock to our country to enjoy its natural beauty. I'm afraid the very thing we are doing to attract tourists will lead to over-development and the image of paradise will be replaced with hotels, parking lots, and power-plants. I know our country is struggling as it is as a third-world country, but we should never sell out. We should deal with foreign businesses only if it will benefit our environment. It's time we take control of our land, and take it out of the hands of those who seek to exploit it.” -provido1982@yahoo.com

“ The need to run after illegal spray painters or graffiti artists is an issue that needs front-page debate again. Its significance is not so much on the rational message the scribbles carry, but the act of dirtying just about anything when vandals want to strike.- ANTONIO FIGUEROA, MINDANAO LINK
