Historical sites according to age
THE events we went through as a people in
Western Visayas bind us together as a unique group of individuals,
different from the other regions of the country.
The chronology of events that happened to
our people was not only recorded in journals but also in the
hearts and minds of those who have gone through the happenings.
It is told to the succeeding generations as proven in the
landmarks left behind. Historians have tried to group these
historical sites according to age so that we may understand
better the things that contributed to our being “us”
today.
The following are the markers of events that
happened long before the Spanish conquistadores settled in
the country:
* KALANTIAW SHRINE in Kalibo, Aklan - built
and dedicated to Rajah Kalantiaw who was famous for his tight
discipline and his Kalantiaw Code
* MALANDOG MARKER in Hamtic, Antique –
marks the site where the first Malayan settlers landed around
1200AD
* OLD WATCHTOWER, Libertad, Antique –
where guardians stayed to warn the natives of approaching
pirates who often attack the area
* MUSEO ILOILO in Iloilo City - where artifacts
and ornaments of the pre-Spanish Era can be found, with information
about their origin and other related facts.
* NEGROS MUSEUM, Bacolod - showcases important
historical events that made Negros the “sugar Bowl of
the Philippines.''
The following are the markers of events that
took place during the Spanish Era:
* FORT SAN PEDRO in Iloilo City - built in the early 1600s;
suffered attacks by Dutch, British, American and Japanese
forces but has remained standing up to now; a good place for
respite after a day of hard work for employees and students
* JANIUAY CEMETERY in Janiuay, Iloilo - a
Hispanic-Japanese cemetery built of cut stone and fossil rock
* BALAY NEGRENSE MUSEUM in Silay City - showcases
the rich and lavish Antillan past of the province
The following are the markers of events that
happened during the war of independence and the American Era:
* FREEDOM SHRINE in Kalibo – built to
commemorate the 19 brave martyrs of Aklan who started the
revolution against Spain
* MACARTHUR WHARF in Buenavista, Guimaras
– known in the past as Buenavista Wharf; built by Douglas
MacArthur in 1903 for international shipping to improve commerce
* PLAZA LIBERTAD in Iloilo City – the
name suggests the love of the Ilonggos for freedom; the spot
where Spanish forces surrendered their last capital in the
islands to the forces of Gen. Martin Delgado. (Reactions and
