CHICKEN MEN. Two men prepare chickens for sale in downtown Iloilo City. These are native chickens, they say. Iloilo province is a top producer of native chickens in the Philippines. In 2003, native chickens accounted for 75.94 percent of the total chicken population in the province, according to the Department of Agriculture, and contributed significantly to the poultry sector. In this area, majority of the farmers are raising native chickens for commercial purposes. This is probably because raising native chickens requires minimum capital input. Aside from that, consumers prefer native chicken. Native chicken eggs have intense yellow color and their meat is known for its taste, leanness and suitability for special dishes.
