Ablong
appointed as new city agriculturist
By ROBERT V. DELA CRUZ
DUMAGUETE City - Former Vice Mayor William
E. Ablong is the new city agriculturist.
The appointment of Ablong came after OIC Engr.
Alfredo Delos Santos was suspended for three months following
his Ombudsman case over the anomalous transactions at the
City Farmsted.
In an interview with Panay News, Ablong said
that he was very grateful to Mayor
Agustin R. Perdices and members of the City Council for his
appointment.
“It is a big challenge for him to serve
particularly the farming and fishing sectors,” said
the newly-appointed City Agriculturist.
Ablong said with his expertise in agriculture
and environment he can integrate programs to attain economic
sustainability in Dumaguete City.
His programs are the Organic Farming through
Vermi-Composting, Ecological Agriculture Program for Sustainability
which integrates the programs in sanitation, environmental
protection and food security; and Biogas Digester to address
the cooking needs because of the high price of LPG.
He is also eyeing to formulate programs on
raising tilapia with the use of seawater in coastal barangays.
Before he entered politics in 2001, Ablong
worked in the Asian Development Bank as consultant for about
10 years and his coverage areas included Vietnam, Indonesia,
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
He was also a consultant for World Bank for
10 years and spent eight years as consultant of USAID and
Consultant of the Economic Development Foundation in Makati
City.
He also served as a Technical and Administrative
Advisor for Coastal Conservation and
Education Foundation in Cebu City and Provincial Consultant
in Negros Oriental
for Coastal Resource Management Project working with the Silliman
University Laboratory.
In 2007, he was defeated in his bid for reelection
in the vice mayoralty seat to Vice Mayor Woodrow S. Maquiling.
Ablong will formally assume the post in a
simple program today at 9:00 am
in the City Agriculture's Office, Fruit Plaza, Bldg. 9, Dumaguete
City Public Market Complex.
Mayor Perdices and other local officials and
Department Heads will spearhead the turn-over ceremony./PN
