KALIBO, Aklan – In a series of activities
today, the local government of Kalibo and the people of this
capital municipality are thanking the Metro Manila Development
Authority (MMDA) for helping rehabilitate this Ati-atihan
town.
Dubbed “Pagpasaeamat,” today’s
activities will be led by Mayor Raymar Rebaldo.
MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando immediately deployed his personnel
to clean the typhoon-stricken areas of Kalibo right after
Typhoon “Frank” left.
There will be a Thanksgiving Mass, dinner,
film showing, fire dance exhibition, party with KME Band and
testimonials from the various sectors of the community at
the Kalibo Magsaysay Park.
“Ang mahalaga sa amin ay ang kaligayahan
na kami ay nakatulong. Ipaparating ko sa Pangulong Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo ang pasasalamat ninyo. (We were happy to
help, and that’s what was important to us. I will tell
the President of your gratefulness),” Fernando said
over DyRU Super Radyo.
Fernando said MMDA is ready to help Kalibo
again, if need be. He hailed the 150 MMDA personnel for their
heroism.
MMDA deployed 35 heavy equipment and also
hired local workers to hasten the rehabilitation of Kalibo
that was swamped with mud and debris.
Aldo Mayor, MMDA special operations officer,
said clogged drainages continue to be one of the major problems
of Kalibo.
"The Aklan River is heavily silted, too.
Dredging could prevent it from flooding the town of Kalibo,"
he added./PN
