More mud to come, warns Libacao mayor

By Jun Ariolo N. Aguirre

KALIBO, Aklan- Libacao Mayor Charito Navarossa urged residents here to prepare for the worst possible scenario as more mud is expected to come during heavy rains and flashfloods.

Navarossa said their assessment report conducted within the hinterland areas of their municipalities revealed that the mud invaded Kalibo came from series of landslides occurred in the Panay Mountain Ranges.

The Panay Mountain Ranges are the hinterland boundaries of Iloilo, Aklan, Antique and Capiz.

"But based on the assessment report conducted by the municipality, only about eight percent of mud reached the capital town of Kalibo. Thus, the threat will continue to be experienced by Kalibo several years from now," Navarossa said.

"I hope the province of Aklan will seek the assistance of the National Disaster and Coordinating Council (NDCC) in order to do something to avert such kind of disaster," Navarossa said.

Earlier, Kalibo Mayor Raymar Rebaldo pointed out the need of the municipality to have a flood control project like dredging of the Aklan River and excavation of basins.

The Sanguniang Bayan of Kalibo sought the assistance of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in strict implementation of quarrying policies in the municipality.

Typhoon “Frank” has changed the landscape of the flow of water from the Aklan River.
Aside from Kalibo, other towns like Banga, Numancia and Lezo with tributaries to Aklan River are endangered too.
