Beyond the Usual

BEING unique is to stand out. Settling for less is not an option. It is going beyond the borders of the conventional to do more and achieving things out of the ordinary.

Because of the urge to serve the public by giving the right information, Danny G. Fajardo founded Panay News on April 7, 1981; it was called Panay News Today then. Its first editorial delivered a strong message: that it would dare to go beyond its locale to deliver excellent public service focused on an adversarial yet responsible mode of journalism—a newspaper that would serve the people and deliver the truth.

For twenty-seven years, Panay News didn’t settle for less. It has weathered storms, climbed mountains and crossed seas. From its humble beginnings as an island journal, Panay News has become not just a region-wide daily, but reaching as far as Manila, extending its territories to reach out to all the Ilonggos and Visayans in the country. Panay News has bridged the archipelagic gap between regions and continues to deliver up-to-date news all over the region—a feat that no other local newspaper can equal.

Panay News is symbolized by the Philippine eagle, signifying strength, boldness and fearless reporting. The eyes of the eagle seek the truth, while its wings span not just in the Visayan region but spread out to Luzon and Mindanao as well. Bureaus have been established in the province of Capiz, Antique, Aklan, Negros Occidental and Cebu, and even in Manila. Panay News’ readership even reaches all the way down to Davao. It has gone beyond the ordinary to bridge the different cultures of the archipelago.

Clearly, walang katulad! Panay News is now the biggest daily in the Visayas. Thanks to its relentless and persistent commitment to deliver truthful information. Walang katulad na pagbibigay ng impormasyon at balita, at walang katulad na paglilingkod sa mamamayang Pilipino!

Why One More

Immediately after martial law, the provincial press scene became alive once more.

Here in Panay, local journalism’s reactivation is more evident in the region’s capital – Iloilo City. There are presently more than half a dozen tabloids beside the national dailies.

Before Panay News Today, Iloilo readers were treated to the mainstays of pre- or post- martial law papers: Bagong Kasanag, Visayan Tribune and Yuhum. On the eve of Pope’s visit in Iloilo, several papers appeared in the streets: Times Herald, Iloilo City Star, Capitol Reporter and Ilonggo Star Today.

Of course there is the Visayan Times from Bacolod City and Visayas Observer from Cebu.

Now, why one more?

Panay News Today is intended to cover the island of Panay. A coverage that was not and cannot be filled by any other paper. Certainly not by the national dailies. Nor by local weeklies. “Not” in the sense that the existing papers cannot even cover the proportionate number of readers against the actual population in a given locality like Iloilo City and Province.

Let’s take Iloilo City for example. The 1975 census (the latest available data) showed the total population of 227,000 persons. Of this total, only one local daily circulates for purposes of local news. The daily circulation figure? 1,000 copies distributed in Negros Occidental and Iloilo. Each local daily averages a circulation of 1,000 copies per week. With these figures, how can one expect to create an awareness of the presence of the local print media?

So when you think of the local papers being on a competitive atmosphere, read again.

Thank you

We take this opportunity to thank you for accompanying us all these years in our roller coaster ride to become an exponent of press freedom in this part of the Philippines. You look at us as the last and effective recourse of your grievances, and so, today, we renew once more our commitment to serve you – and we vow to serve you better.

We have added more pages for your reading pleasure, although we are sure a few others would crease their foreheads because this means added pages of torment.

We have our fair share of critics, but we thank them, too. We may have ruffled their feather in the name of public interest, but hey, they read us, too.

Aside from adding more pages that suit the interests of our wide spectrum of readers, we have improved our online edition, too. We are reaching a wider audience – abroad. We thank them for making us a part of their lives even if they are far away from us.
For the past quarter of a century, Panay News has been vanguard of free press and speech. With newer technologies at our disposal, we assure our reading public that we will continue to be the best in what we do – as vanguards of a free and untrammeled press.
